ROCKSTAR MOTUL SUZUKI’S CODY COOPER MAINTAINS MOMENTUM AT MOREE
Team Rockstar Motul Suzuki star Cody Cooper continued his impressive form at the seventh round of the Australian National Motocross Championship at Moree.
After struggling with the flu all week, Cooper was keen to maintain his momentum from his overall victory at the previous round, and he did not disappoint with another podium performance.
Qualifying third fastest, the New Zealander dominated the first moto, taking the lead early and checking out to take the win by over two seconds.
Consistent results in the second and third motos saw Cooper record a pair a seconds. However in the fourth moto, the gruelling four moto format, coupled with the after effects of his flu, resulted in an 11th position.
The 1-2-2-11 result saw the Suzuki star claim third place overall for the round and in doing so, move up to fourth place in the championship.
Cooper now sits only four points shy of third placed Billy Mackenzie, and 11 points off Dean Ferris in second place.
With the final Coolum round being a double header, and with 150 points on offer, Cooper is still certainly a championship contender.
“It was tough out there today,” Cooper said.
“I’ve been sick all week and today I feel so much better than I have for a week, but in that last moto it was like sprinting for 15 minutes and I just wanted to throw up everywhere at the end!
“I am looking forward to Coolum, there are plenty of points on offer and I will have a red hot go.”
Pro Lites rising star Lawson Bopping had a mixed bag of results at the seventh round. A
13-3-6-13 result saw him finish ninth overall and he currently sits sixth in the championship.
Bopping again showed glimpses of his speed and talent, but his overall result was hamstrung by two poor moto results.
Jay Foreman, Team Manager, Rockstar Motul Suzuki, was circumspect about the day’s results.
“Cody carried on his good form from Wodonga, but he was struggling with the after effects of the flu” he said.
“He put in three good motos, but the last one let him down. The back to back format and the after effects of the flu really took a toll on him.
“Cody again showed great speed. He can rest this week to get over the flu and come out firing at Coolum.
“There are 150 points still up for grabs so he is still a realistic shot at a championship, and Cody has proven he has the winning form at the right end of the championship season.”
The eighth and final round of the 2010 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals will be held on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 July at Coolum Pines Motocross Park.
